Ecuador! Iedereen die, net als mij, is opgegroeid in de jaren ’90 zal dit lekker foute dance nummer van Sash wel herkennen. Ik was 12 jaar toen dit een wereldhit was in 1997. Op dat moment was het voor mij een uitgemaakte zaak dat ik voetballer zou worden, of sportjournalist als het echt moet. En toch schrijf ik jullie nu – september 2010 – vanuit Quito, Ecuador. Wat ik doe? Ik ben een Junior Assistent voor het Belgische ontwikkelingsagentschap. Functiebeschrijving: SPOC.
Maak je geen zorgen, ze hebben het mij ook moeten uitleggen. Wat ik in het BTC hoofdkantoor in Quito ben, is het Single Point Of Contact, SPOC dus. Ik zal me helemaal smijten om de communicatie en visibiliteit van de BTC (hier CTB) en haar projecten te verbeteren en in tweede instantie zal ik werken aan de promotie van de MIPs (Micro Projecten). Eerlijk is eerlijk: op het moment dat ik dit schrijf zijn er nog altijd meer vragen dan antwoorden. Maar tijd om me daar zorgen over te maken is er niet: werk genoeg. En laten we – filosofisch als we zijn – elke vraag en elk probleem als het begin van een antwoord en een oplossing zien.
Als één van de uitverkorenen van het Junior Programma ben ik alleszins razend enthousiast om aan mijn taak hier te beginnen. Waar zou ik dit allemaal aan verdiend hebben? Ik gok op mijn studies communicatie en journalistiek, maar ook de erasmusuitwisseling in Sevilla zal er voor iets tussen zitten: hablan español por aqui! De ervaring die me het meeste zal helpen hier, blijven toch wel de twee maanden bij Greenpeace Belgium – waar ik werkte in de aanloop naar de klimaatconferentie in Kopenhagen – en de zes maanden dat ik werkte bij het regionale informatiecentrum van de Verenigde Naties in Brussel. Een onvergetelijke ervaring die me onderdompelde in alles wat met communicatie te maken heeft in deze comlexe wereld die ontwikkelingssamenwerking toch wel is. Dat is alles wat je voorlopig van mij moet weten, lijkt me. Rest me alleen nog echt aan het werk te gaan. En toch ook wel genieten van la vida ecuatoriana. Je hoort nog van mij.

Ecuador! Everybody who grew up in the ’90, just like me, will probably recognize this trashy dance song by Sash!. I was only 12 years old when it was a worldwide hit single in 1997. At that time, in my mind, I was still predestinated to become a professional football player, or sports journalist at worst. Who would have thought that I would be writing you guys right now – in the year 2010 – from Quito, Ecuador? What am I doing here? Well, I’m a Junior Assistant for the Belgian Development Agency. Job description: SPOC.
Don’t worry, they had to explain me as well. What I am at the BTC headquarters in Quito is the Single Point Of Contact, the SPOC, that is. I will be giving my all to improve the communication and visibility of the BTC (here it’s called CTB) and her ongoing projects and secondly I will work on the promotion of the MIPs (micro projects). Fair’s fair: at the very moment I’m writing this still more questions than answers remain. But no time to worry about that as there is plenty of work. And philosophic as we are, shouldn’t we see every question and every problem as the beginning of an answer and a solution?
Anyhow, as one of the chosen few by the Junior Programme I am wildly enthusiastic to start my work here. What did I do to deserve this? I would bet on my studies in communication and journalism, but I guess my Erasmus experience in Sevilla has done his bit as well: hablan español por aqui! The experiences that will help me most in my new job are definitely the two months spent at Greenpeace Belgium, where I was working heading up to the climate conference in Copenhagen, and especially the six months at UNRIC, the regional information centre of the United Nations in Brussels. An unforgettable experience that immersed me in everything linked to communication in this complex world that development cooperation still is.
I guess that’s what you need to know about me for now. Now the only thing left for me is to get started. And to enjoy la vida ecuatoriana of course! You will be hearing from me.
